SUMMARY:IIIT-TMP Workshop Series on Integrating Islamic Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n \n \nFrom 7th to 8th November 2025\, IIIT East and Southeast Asia had organized a Teaching Materials Project (TMP) Workshop for lecturers of IIUM at The Chateau Spa & Wellness\, Bukit Tinggi\, Pahang. These lecturers from various Kuliyyahs in IIUM had been working on their Teaching Materials to be used in the classes in the future. The speaker for the 2-days workshop is Prof Dr Dawood Abdelyahya al-Hidabi from Kuliyyah of Education. He is an important resource person in helping lecturers managing and constructing the best content for the teaching materials that will be in line with the concept and ideas of integrating Islamic principles. This workshop also allowed more interaction and exchanges of ideas between lecturers in writing the best TMP. \nProf. Dawood open the workshop with a foundational hadith: \n“Indeed\, there is a piece of flesh in the body; if it is sound\, the whole body is sound. If it is corrupt\, the whole body is corrupt. Verily\, it is the heart.”\n— Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim \nThis message captures the essence of the workshop: the heart is the starting point of knowledge\, identity\, purpose\, and transformation. \nAcross difference academic disciplines\, education\, psychology\, design\, engineering\, and economics\, Western epistemologies have dominated. Concepts like Bandura’s learning theory and Bloom’s taxonomy shape how knowledge is interpreted\, measured\, and applied. \nThis question reflects a broader challenge in Muslim academia: we have mastered importing knowledge but rarely contextualize or originate it. Prof. Dawood emphasized that Muslim scholars\, institutions\, and researchers must shift from consumers to contributors\, grounded in tawhid\, purpose\, and akhlaq. \nThe workshop reinforced IIUM’s aspiration toward Ummatic excellence\, where education is not merely for exams but for life\, service\, and the pleasure of Allah (mardhatillah). Islamic civilization\, history\, and scholarship—both classical and contemporary—should be integrated meaningfully\, not just symbolically. \nProf. Dawood emphasized that only when knowledge\, faith\, and action are harmoniously integrated can the Ummah truly reclaim its role as a source of guidance\, justice\, and mercy in the world. Every lesson learned and every skill developed should therefore aim not merely for academic achievement\, but for life\, leadership\, and meaningful service. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON ISLAMOPHOBIA: MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT THROUGH MADANI DISCOURSE
DESCRIPTION:On 27th February 2023\, International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia and Prime Minister Department had organized the event entitled INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON ISLAMOPHOBIA: MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT THROUGH MADANI DISCOURSE. The forum was held at Damar Sari Hall\, Complex F8\, Precint 1\, Putrajaya and the invitation was extended to 600 participants from government staff\, ambassadors and embassy official\, NGO leaders and activist. \n  \nThe welcoming remarks was done by Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir\, Minister of Foreign Affairs. After the forum\, the closing was done by  Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim\, Prime Minister of Malaysia. \n \nThe forum featured Dr. Ahmad El- Muhammady\, Assistant Professor at International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC)\, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Professor Ziauddin Sardar\, Director of Centre for Postnormal Policy and Futures Studies (CPPFS). The forum was moderated by Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohd Samsudin\, Chief Executive Officer of Global Peace Mission (GPM). \n  \nThe forum was done based on Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim vision of MADANI. The “MADANI” vision is built around six core values namely sustainability\, care and compassion\, respect\, innovation\, prosperity and trust. Through the adherence to these key values in its various policies and programmes\, the government aims to envelop its various efforts with the spirit of Rahmah (i.e.\, mercy) and Karamah Insaniah (respect for human dignity). \n  \nBy valuing and respecting the rights and dignity of every individual\, the Malaysian society will be able to demonstrate the beauty of Islam\, its teachings and its relevance in facing contemporary challenges. An important aspect of the MADANI vision is the need to honour and respect the rights and dignity of every human being irrespective of colour\, religious or socioeconomic background. \n  \nThe recent public burning of the Qur’an by extremists in Sweden\, the mass murder of Muslims during a congregation prayer in a mosque in New Zealand\, the ban of minarets on mosques in Switzerland\, the refusal by some European governments to accept Muslim refugees fleeing wars in the Middle East and the continuing harassment of Muslim women who choose to wear the Hijab in various Western countries are just but a few poignant examples of this corrosive Islamophobia that currently plagues many Western and other non-Muslim societies. \n \nThe objective of the forum are:- \n\nTo present Malaysia as a model of tolerance\, harmony and healthy multi-religious and multicultural engagement;\nTo provide a platform for dialogue and intellectual discussions on the causes\, processes and the proper responses needed to counter issues of Islamophobia\, religious intolerance and discrimination\nTo provide an opportunity for institutional and social collaboration as well as networking among stakeholders towards fighting Islamophobia and religious discrimination;\npromote better understanding towards Islam and Muslims both locally and internationally;\n\n  \nIIIT is hopeful that the forum will be beneficial in fostering cooperation and understanding among Muslims and non-Muslims in Malaysia and around the world. \n  \nTo watch the recording of forum and officiating speech by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim\, click here:- \nForum \n\nPM Speech

SUMMARY:MAQASID AL-SHARIAH PROVIDES A THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE APPLICATION OF SHARIAH IN VARIOUS DISCIPLINES – PROFESSOR KASULE
DESCRIPTION:On December 10\, 2022\, the International Institute of Islamic Thought East and Southeast Asia (IIIT-ESEA) organised a one-day symposium on “Applied Maqasid Studies” in Kuala Lumpur. Presenters during the symposium were recipients of IIIT Strategic Research Project (SRP) grants for the year 2021/2022. The symposium focused on the application of Maqasid al-Shariah in various academic disciplines and in tackling various social\, economic\, environmental and health issues facing humanity in the contemporary world. \n \nDuring his keynote address\, IIIT Secretary General Professor Omar Hasan Kasule highlighted the need for Muslim scholars to deepen their research and understanding of the Maqasid al-Shariah to further contribute to research on the “Integration of Knowledge” and its application for solving the problems of the Ummah and humanity. Professor Kasule also emphasised on the need for researchers to follow proper research methodology and utilise the Maqasid al-Shariah framework to come up with good and testable hypotheses which can then be empirically tested and analysed in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah. Professor Kasule concluded by congratulating all the participants in the symposium for their efforts towards applying the Maqasid al-Shariah approach in studying and tackling real world problems. \n \nEarlier during the opening speech for the symposium\, the Director of IIIT-ESEA Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Fauzan Noordin reminded the participants that the application of the Maqasid al-Shariah framework is relevant both in the “real” world and the “virtual” world. Professor Fauzan urged the researchers to engage the Maqasid approach in researching issues in both areas as “Allah SW is the God for both the real world and the virtual world”. \n \nThe symposium was well attended and several papers on the application of the Maqasid approach were presented that covered a wide range of issues from climate crisis\, genetic engineering\, Islamic Finance and Banking\, Politics\, issues affecting children with disabilities\, commercial advertising and many more. \n \n

SUMMARY:Book Launch and Discussion: "Emerging Epistemologies" by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn 26th October 2022\, the International Institute of Islamic Thought East and South East Asia (IIIT-ESEA) organised a launching ceremony for the book Emerging Epistemologies: The Changing Fabric of Knowledge in Postnormal Times. The launch was officiated by IIIT President Emeritus Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Tamu Hotel in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia. \nDuring his speech Dato’ Seri Anwar emphasised on the role played by the Islamisation of Knowledge movement led by the late Dr Ismail Faruqi in bringing to focus various important issues that affected the Muslim Ummah particularly in the area of education. Anwar recollected how the works of al Faruqi and other important scholars of the IOK movement encouraged him personally to further engage with Islamic literature and deepen his knowledge on issues of epistemology\, Islamisation\, orientalism and others. \nThe IIIT President Emeritus said that the IOK movement made it possible for various other Muslim scholars to begin to earnestly engage in intellectual debates that focused on issues of Westernisation\, secularism and integration of knowledge. Completing the panel of discussion during the launch were Professor Dato’ Osman Bakar and Professor Dr Ziauddin Sardar. \nEdited by Professor Sardar\, Emerging Epistemologies presents the idea that “Epistemology does not exist in a vacuum; it is embedded in the worldview and culture of society”. The book explores the changing nature of knowledge production and how epistemologies are transforming perceptions of the present and the future. The book describes “postnormal times” as a product of digital culture and explores how such culture is “increasing uncertainties and transforming epistemes”. \nHowever\, Professor Sardar argues in the book that while artificial intelligence is highly capable of performing several important functions\, “wisdom may not be an attribute that could be transferred to a machine – however intelligent it may be”.  Also in the discussion panel was Professor Dato’ Osman Bakar. Professor Osman emphasised on the need for Muslim scholars to work hard to keep up with the changing trends in technologies such as AI and provide the necessary direction and response to epistemological issues that may arise with the impact of such technologies on the Muslim Ummah and society at large. \n

SUMMARY:Leadership Training for Myanmar Youth (15th - 16th October 2022)
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe International Institute of Islamic Thought East and Southeast Asia (IIIT-ESEA) recently organised a two-days leadership training programme for the Myanmar youth in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia. The training workshop was held on the 15th and 16th October 2022 and was attended by more than 100 Myanmar youth currently living in Malaysia and neighbouring countries. \n  \nDuring the workshop\, IIIT-ESEA Advisor Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr Jamil Osman spoke about the importance of higher education for the development of Muslim minority communities. Dato’ Jamil emphasised on the importance of education citing it as one of the most important ingredients of development together with health and income. \n  \nDato’ Jamil reminded the participants on the need to create a balance between material and spiritual development. Dato’ Jamil reminded the participants that “future leaders of the Muslim community must plan for the development of the Muslims through education and economy by incorporating both modern knowledge and religious knowledge” so as to produce “graduates and manpower with the right values and qualities without compromising their job skills and marketability”. \n  \nIn another presentation\, IIIT-ESEA Deputy Director Professor Dr Mohamed Aslam Haneef presented on the topic “Development: Meaning\, Measurement and Implications for Muslim Communities”. Professor Aslam discussed how definitions and scope of “development” have widened from merely focusing on GNP per capita in the 1950s and 1960s to much broader and holistic frameworks that also include social development\, human development as well as conceptions of sustainable development. \n  \nProfessor Aslam said that this shift in the scope and meaning of development is closer to the Islamic position on development especially when viewed from the perspective of Maqasid al Shariah (i.e.\, Objectives of Shariah). Making reference to the Qur’anic verse that says “Allah will not change the condition of people until they change what is in themselves”\, Professor Aslam concluded by urging the Myanmar youth to establish a Myanmar students study group to regularly discuss and debate about the development of Myanmar so that they could make a positive contribution to their home country. \n  \nThe workshop participants expressed their commitment to continue to learn and work to prepare for their future in Myanmar and thanked the IIIT for its support to the Myanmar youth for organizing the workshop.  The workshop was closed by IIIT-ESEA Director Professor Dr Mohamad Fauzan Bin Noordin who congratulated the participants for their efforts and encouraged them to continue to learn and prepare for a better future in Myanmar. \n
