SUMMARY:INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON ISLAMOPHOBIA: MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT THROUGH MADANI DISCOURSE
DESCRIPTION:On 27th February 2023\, International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia and Prime Minister Department had organized the event entitled INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON ISLAMOPHOBIA: MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT THROUGH MADANI DISCOURSE. The forum was held at Damar Sari Hall\, Complex F8\, Precint 1\, Putrajaya and the invitation was extended to 600 participants from government staff\, ambassadors and embassy official\, NGO leaders and activist. \n  \nThe welcoming remarks was done by Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir\, Minister of Foreign Affairs. After the forum\, the closing was done by  Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim\, Prime Minister of Malaysia. \n \nThe forum featured Dr. Ahmad El- Muhammady\, Assistant Professor at International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation (ISTAC)\, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Professor Ziauddin Sardar\, Director of Centre for Postnormal Policy and Futures Studies (CPPFS). The forum was moderated by Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohd Samsudin\, Chief Executive Officer of Global Peace Mission (GPM). \n  \nThe forum was done based on Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim vision of MADANI. The “MADANI” vision is built around six core values namely sustainability\, care and compassion\, respect\, innovation\, prosperity and trust. Through the adherence to these key values in its various policies and programmes\, the government aims to envelop its various efforts with the spirit of Rahmah (i.e.\, mercy) and Karamah Insaniah (respect for human dignity). \n  \nBy valuing and respecting the rights and dignity of every individual\, the Malaysian society will be able to demonstrate the beauty of Islam\, its teachings and its relevance in facing contemporary challenges. An important aspect of the MADANI vision is the need to honour and respect the rights and dignity of every human being irrespective of colour\, religious or socioeconomic background. \n  \nThe recent public burning of the Qur’an by extremists in Sweden\, the mass murder of Muslims during a congregation prayer in a mosque in New Zealand\, the ban of minarets on mosques in Switzerland\, the refusal by some European governments to accept Muslim refugees fleeing wars in the Middle East and the continuing harassment of Muslim women who choose to wear the Hijab in various Western countries are just but a few poignant examples of this corrosive Islamophobia that currently plagues many Western and other non-Muslim societies. \n \nThe objective of the forum are:- \n\nTo present Malaysia as a model of tolerance\, harmony and healthy multi-religious and multicultural engagement;\nTo provide a platform for dialogue and intellectual discussions on the causes\, processes and the proper responses needed to counter issues of Islamophobia\, religious intolerance and discrimination\nTo provide an opportunity for institutional and social collaboration as well as networking among stakeholders towards fighting Islamophobia and religious discrimination;\npromote better understanding towards Islam and Muslims both locally and internationally;\n\n  \nIIIT is hopeful that the forum will be beneficial in fostering cooperation and understanding among Muslims and non-Muslims in Malaysia and around the world. \n  \nTo watch the recording of forum and officiating speech by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim\, click here:- \nForum \n\nPM Speech

SUMMARY:Book Launch and Discussion: "Emerging Epistemologies" by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn 26th October 2022\, the International Institute of Islamic Thought East and South East Asia (IIIT-ESEA) organised a launching ceremony for the book Emerging Epistemologies: The Changing Fabric of Knowledge in Postnormal Times. The launch was officiated by IIIT President Emeritus Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Tamu Hotel in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia. \nDuring his speech Dato’ Seri Anwar emphasised on the role played by the Islamisation of Knowledge movement led by the late Dr Ismail Faruqi in bringing to focus various important issues that affected the Muslim Ummah particularly in the area of education. Anwar recollected how the works of al Faruqi and other important scholars of the IOK movement encouraged him personally to further engage with Islamic literature and deepen his knowledge on issues of epistemology\, Islamisation\, orientalism and others. \nThe IIIT President Emeritus said that the IOK movement made it possible for various other Muslim scholars to begin to earnestly engage in intellectual debates that focused on issues of Westernisation\, secularism and integration of knowledge. Completing the panel of discussion during the launch were Professor Dato’ Osman Bakar and Professor Dr Ziauddin Sardar. \nEdited by Professor Sardar\, Emerging Epistemologies presents the idea that “Epistemology does not exist in a vacuum; it is embedded in the worldview and culture of society”. The book explores the changing nature of knowledge production and how epistemologies are transforming perceptions of the present and the future. The book describes “postnormal times” as a product of digital culture and explores how such culture is “increasing uncertainties and transforming epistemes”. \nHowever\, Professor Sardar argues in the book that while artificial intelligence is highly capable of performing several important functions\, “wisdom may not be an attribute that could be transferred to a machine – however intelligent it may be”.  Also in the discussion panel was Professor Dato’ Osman Bakar. Professor Osman emphasised on the need for Muslim scholars to work hard to keep up with the changing trends in technologies such as AI and provide the necessary direction and response to epistemological issues that may arise with the impact of such technologies on the Muslim Ummah and society at large. \n
